Start with three jobs

Think in functions before brands: cleansing, moisturising and sun protection. A simple routine is easier to maintain and makes it easier to notice how an individual product suits you.

Compare the essentials

Gel vs lotion vs cream

These names describe formats, not guaranteed results. Gels often feel lighter; lotions tend to spread easily; creams can feel richer. Formulas vary, so compare the actual ingredients, directions and finish. A costly texture is not automatically a better fit.

Keep the routine straightforward

The American Academy of Dermatology recommends mild cleansing, daily moisturising and broad-spectrum, water-resistant SPF 30 or higher outdoors. Follow sunscreen directions and reapply as advised, including after swimming or sweating. Choose fragrance-free options if your skin is sensitive; “unscented” is not the same claim.

Read past the front label

  • Size and usage: compare cost per unit and the amount the directions require.
  • Ingredients: check the full list, particularly for known personal sensitivities.
  • Claims: distinguish cosmetic descriptions from proven benefits for a specific formula.
  • Market: names, formulations, sunscreen labelling and availability can differ by country.

What can wait?

Multiple serums, elaborate kits and extra steps can wait until you know why you want them. Introduce new products gradually and follow the label. Persistent burning, a rash or an ongoing skin concern deserves professional advice rather than another purchase.

Before checkout

Check the seller, sealed packaging, expiry or period-after-opening information, delivery costs and returns rules. Avoid treating a subscription discount as a saving unless you actually need the recurring supply.
